i have stacked carbs on a two stroke outboard and the bottom carb has a clogged jet. i can get at the jet without removing the bottom carb but i would have to remove the top one. question time: do i need a new gasket or gasket paper if i remove only the top carb? it's got gasket paper in there now. it would cut my work in half if i could pop it off, clean the jet, and pop it back on. also i can't recall if i used FIPG last time or just paper...do i need FIPG?

I have a lawnmower. When it stops working, I put more gas in it. That is where my knowledge of how to fix small engines ends.

I've monkeyed with 2-stroke carbs all my life and never once have I replaced a gasket. If the gasket gets torn, then worry about it. Otherwise, as long as it's still intact, you're good to go. If you need to replace a gasket and can't easily find the one you need, just use formagasket .
The thing about a carb is that it's just holding up the fuel and letting the engine suck it in. There's no pressure or anything that would cause fluids to leak out around it. If there's a huge hole, you might wind up with some air entering the intake system without passing through the carb, which would be bad (it would mean a leaner fuel mixture), but frankly, your gasket would have to be pretty shot to cause that. The carb is a huge hole that specifically is designed to let air in. Air has no reason to try leaking in around it.

I ended up cutting some new paper gaskets cause one of the old ones was sopping wet. Worked great this weekend once I unclogged the jet and put some fresh gas in.

That's great! Also, I just wanted to say, that is one heck of a clean engine. Did you detail it, or is it just in that great of a condition?

Wow. Lucky man! My toys always look like they've been stored submerged in a vat of used motor oil, until I clean them up.

If the gasket seems ok, it probably is. And.. it's not a pressure sensitive application, so it's rather forgiving. I always keep a tube of Permatex Gasket maker on hand anyway.. a thin coat on something that doesn't feel quite resilient enough seems to make sense to me.
